I've mentioned before that I have a younger sister named Kelly and that being an older sister is one of my greatest joys in life. Sisterhood is one of the strongest bonds that there is and I thought I'd share the reasons why I personally love having a sister.
1. You can borrow each other's clothing. We do this all the time. There is nothing better than going to my sister's closet when I have nothing to wear. Even though we are almost 5 years apart, we are almost the exact same size. It works out perfectly. But trust me, she steals my clothes way more than I steal hers.
See that shirt I'm wearing? Yeah, that's Kelly's.
2. You're never bored. If I'm starting to get bored and want some company, I go bother my sister. My sister likes to be alone, so she complains when I try to talk to her. Her dramatic reactions provide just enough entertainment for me. (I think she secretly likes it but she'd never admit it.)
3. I can give her advice on things that I wish that I knew when I was her age. I can speak from experience and tell her how to learn from my mistakes. Of course, just because I give the advice doesn't mean that she actually takes it. But when it does happen, I appreciate it.
4. It's practice for motherhood. Sometimes, I treat my sister like my daughter. I can't help it. Sometimes it just feels like I am. My parents are divorced and my sister lives with my mom. My dad has two jobs, so he can't always help my mom out as much as he'd like. So when my mom is busy and can't do things like cook dinner or can't pick Kelly up, the responsibility falls to me. I don't mind helping my mom out because I started to realize that once I become a mom, I'll be doing things like that all the time.
5. I got to watch her grow up. On a very serious note, it was a privilege to be there for all of her life's milestones and her accomplishments. I loved every second of watching her grow up, whether it was watching her take her first steps, hearing her first words or watching her pursue her photography passion. I was lucky enough to see it all and it makes me all that more excited for her life.
We don't always get along. In fact, we're quite different and we fight a lot. But at the end of the day, we're there for each other and our lives are full of terrific memories together that I'll cherish forever. I joke around with my parents telling them that they should've only had me but the truth is, I wouldn't have it any other way.
What are your favorite things about your sibling?
